5 Bewildering Natural Occurrences You Have To See To Believe
Nature indeed has its wonders. Ever since the advent of mankind around 200,000 years ago, our ancestors have looked upon Mother Earth and held nature to such a degree to seek life-sustaining nourishment and shelter. With the global warming crisis looming amidst modern society, it is more than relevant to be reminded about the beauty and phenomena that occur within nature’s presence. Here are five of the most amazing natural events that occur on our great planet.
MAELSTROMS
Maelstroms are probably one of the banes of the Age of Discovery and Exploration. With little scientific knowledge, our ancestors braved the unknown seas to discover land far and wide. We can only imagine one of the distinguished captains of one of the voyages witnessing one of nature’s grand occurrences where a giant whirlpool appears within their midst. As scary it may sound, what a sight it must’ve been, where massive currents joined by strong tides whirl around, creating a giant vacuum that would deck any known sea vessels known to man. To the credit of the esteemed author Edgar Allan Poe, his classic A Descent into the Maelstrom is one of the biggest recorded maelstrom known as Moskstraumen.
MIGRATION OF THE SERENGETI
Serengeti is located in Africa, spanning across the northern region of Tanzania. It is home to one of the world’s finest ecological treasures, the Serengeti National Park. Annually, for three months, starting in January, the southern part of Serengeti experiences a massive animal migration. It is a grand occurrence with the insurance of amazing sights, which is a consequence of grazing patterns. The mass migration exodus sees 1.2 million wildebeests, 750,00 zebras, and hundreds of thousands of other games follow the newly ripened grazing plains of the Serengeti.
THE GREAT SALMON RUSH
This next one is probably the favorite of the brown and black bears of British Columbia. The great salmon rush is where tons and tons of salmon swim upstream towards the upper reaches of the rivers of British Columbia. To the credit of these salmons, this is no easy task that they annually undergo for them to commit to their natural cycle of life. They swim upstream for them to deposit their eggs on the gravel beds of the river. Scientists have studied this phenomenon and have concluded that the salmons follow a familiar scent, which would eventually lead them back to their place of birth. A journey that brings a whole new meaning to the term circle of life, in our opinion.
RAIN OF FISH
As absurd as it may sound, the Rain of Fish that reportedly happens once or twice a year in the small town of Yoro in Honduras has some arguable evidence to it. The small town, being subject to massive thunderstorms and rain between May and July, experiences a phenomenon where the storm clouds precipitate fish along with water. These absurd occurrences are held to such a degree that locals have turned to religious explanations as to how it happens. The rational theory, though, doesn’t pale in comparison to the biblical passages. Scientists have theorized that the fish may have been blown along waterspouts as the storms rage on across the seas towards Honduras.
THE MONARCH BUTTERFLY MIGRATION
Butterflies have always been one of Mother Nature’s beauties. They undergo such an amazing transformation that the uninformed would be bedazzled to learn that they evolve from caterpillars within their lifespan. Although, there is no insurance that every caterpillar would turn into a butterfly. However, in the fortunate chance that a caterpillar evolves to a Monarch Butterfly in the northern Americas, they would undertake a massive migration annually. The stunning sights of this mass migration occur when these butterflies escape the harsh cold weather in search of warmer areas. Those in the know even report these migrations to have the capabilities of crossing the vast seas of the Atlantic Ocean.
